Experience the music of Agathe Backer Grøndahl this summer. Every Tuesday and Thursday in July and August, the exhibition “Harriet Backer. Every Atom is Colour” comes alive with music.
A pianist performs works by Agathe Backer Grøndahl – surrounded by the paintings of her sister, Harriet Backer. Each concert lasts 30 minutes and takes place in Permanenten. Here, you’re up close with both the art and the music – becoming part of a unique sensory experience.
– Harriet Backer’s paintings and Agathe Backer Grøndahl’s music share clear similarities. In the paintings, we see bold colour contrasts placed side by side, while Backer Grøndahl’s music shifts between light and dark tones – often played simultaneously across different registers of the piano, says Christian Grøvlen, Director of Music and Composer Homes at Kode.
Agathe Backer Grøndahl (1847–1907) was a pioneering pianist and composer – and one of Norway’s most important female artists of the 19th century. Her music reflects the sensitivity and elegance of the Romantic era, infused with a distinct melodic strength and emotional depth.
